The importance of doing retreat

To do retreat is a wonderful opportunity to temporarily leave aside our daily activities and to find the necessary time to get to know oneself, investigate how our mind works and develop qualities such as basic awareness and the good heart, essential tools that will help us to face the ever present challenges of our busy lives.

If you have the opportunity to do retreat, you are extremely fortunate. Few things are as beneficial as this.

“…doing retreat gives us the time and the space we need to cultivate the basic human qualities, this is crucial and very urgent; a real emergency since our lives and those of others are in danger. One has to know how to develop such qualities. This is the first reason for doing retreat to develop the basic human qualities of affection and loving kindness…”  Lama Zopa Rimpoché

O Sel Ling regularly offers group retreats and we also have retreat huts build in stone and wood in the traditional Alpujarra style, available for solitary retreat.

The facilities are simple but comfortable, ideal for spiritual practice. We also have a very well stocked library and a small shop with books, incense and other retreat items for sale.

Great teachers and many practitioners have meditated at the centre since its beginnings, blessing this place with their practice and impregnating it with positive and inspiring energy.

Useful information for your stay at O Sel Ling

In order to support this atmosphere that helps self investigation, we ask those who visit O Sel Ling and those who come to do retreat, to observe the 5 basic ethic Buddhist principles, known as the 5 precepts:

  • Respect all life: do not intentionally kill any living being, even small insects.
  • Respect others’ property: do not steal or take anything not freely given.
  • Be honest and straightforward: do not lie or intentionally deceive others.
  • Avoid intoxicants such as alcohol and drugs since they cause confusion in the mind.
  • Avoid any sexual misconduct that could damage already established relationships.

We also ask to cultivate an attitude of consideration and respect towards the place and towards the sacred objects at all times understanding that they are not toys.
